Concept artwork of Djungarians from Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Games

The Djungarians (ジャンガリアンず) are a large group of hamsters in the Hamtaro series. They live in Djungle-Bell Island, and are often seen dressed in costumes; most commonly designed after other animal species.

Overview[]

The Djungarians are based on an actual breed of dwarf hamsters under the same name, also known as "winter white" hamsters or Siberian hamsters. According to several sources (including a segment in Tottoko Hamutaro: Tokimeki Dechu ♥), Ritsuko Kawai, the creator of Hamtaro, owned thirteen (or possibly more) djungarians as pets during her early work on the manga series. It is theorized that the djungarians in the Hamtaro franchise were modeled after Kawai's own djungarians - which would also explain the massive, wide-spreading amount of them.

The first known Djungarians to appear in the Hamtaro series are the Djungarian Choir - a group of five hamsters, without any special costumes. The choir appeared in Hamtaro: Adventures in Ham-Ham Land, Hamtaro: Rainbow Rescue, and the Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Games video game, alongside a handful of manga adaptions and merchandise pieces.

A new type of Djungarians was created for Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Games - both the video game and the OVA adaption - which wore costumes in the likeness of dozens of different animals, among other things. These Djungarians would also appear in the Paradaichu! era of the anime series, starring across a five-part special from episodes 211 to 215. The four main Djungarians from Ham-Ham Games - Leo, Stripes, Bunny and Warts - also appear in the episode Djungarian's Halloween (#224). Additionally, a few Djungarians are seen in the educational "Numbers and Shapes" special.
